  13. How do I specify the overall frequency stability of an Ecliptek EB13D7 and EB15D7 series oscillator?
Ecliptek offers ±50ppm frequency stability option. Ecliptek specifies the frequency stability performance of the device inclusive of specific oscillator operating conditions. This is often called the "Inclusive Method". Ecliptek specifies the following parameters for these series of products:

    • Frequency Stability over Operating Temperature Range
    • Supply Voltage
    • Output Load
    • First Year Aging
    • Shock
    • Vibration

Ecliptek offers a commercial temperature range of 0°C to +70°C.
  16. Top of Page

  17. What is oscillator aging and what are the aging specifications for this oscillator series?
Aging is the systematic change in frequency with time due to internal changes in the crystal and/or oscillator. Aging is often expressed as a maximum value in parts per million per year [ppm/year]. The rate of aging is logarithmic in nature. The following factors effect crystal aging: adsorption and desorption of contamination on the surfaces of the quartz, stress relief of the mounting and bonding structures, material outgassing, and seal integrity. At a rated operating temperature of 25°C, these series of products typically age at a rate of less than ±3ppm over the first year, ±1ppm over the following year, logarithmically declining each year there after.

  19. What is the start-up time for these series?
Start-up time for this series is specified at 10mSec maximum. Note: In order to ensure proper start-up, the power supply start-up should have an exponential curve typical of a capacitive charge of a linear voltage ramp. If you have a special voltage start-up profile (i.e. odd ramp steps or shapes), please contact us to discuss possible oscillator performance issues.

  21. What are the output signal characteristics for the EB13D7 and EB15D7 series oscillators?
Ecliptek offers this oscillator product series with a low voltage HCMOS (LVHCMOS) output. The oscillator output topology is designed so as to optimize circuit load matching and signal performance. Signal integrity is optimized when the low impedance output of the oscillator, typically 7 ohms, is driving a high impedance-low capacitance input.

  23. What is the output load for these product series?
The Ecliptek EB13D7 and EB15D7 series oscillators have a high speed CMOS output driver that enables the output signal to swing from ground to VDD. Ecliptek offers the 3.3VDC EB13D7 and the 2.5VDC EB15D7 series with a 15pF HCMOS output load. If a customer requires a different load from that specified on the datasheet, please consult the factory with your custom requirements.
  24. Top of Page

  25. Is tight duty cycle (symmetry) available for this series?
The standard duty cycle specification is 45% minimum, 55% maximum, measured at 50% of the waveform.

  26. What are the jitter specifications for these product series?
Jitter is the measure in the time domain and is specified in picoseconds (pSec) as a maximum RMS value. Phase noise is a measure in the frequency domain and is specified in decibels at various offset points from the carrier (-dBc/Hz). Ecliptek uses a proprietary design, exclusive processing methods, and a unique output driver circuit enabling these series of oscillators to have exceptionally low rms phase jitter. The RMS jitter parameters can be found on the EB13D7 and EB15D7 series specifications sheets.

  28. Do the EB13D7 and EB15D7 series oscillator offer output tri-state capability?
Both of these product series offer a tri-state output capability. The output is three-stated (tri-state condition) when the voltage at the control pad is set to a logic low state. In this condition, the oscillator continues to operate, but the output pin is now in a high impedance state. If the voltage at the control pad (pad 1) is set to no connect or a logic high state, the output (pad 3) is enabled (clocking). Note: The oscillator has an internal pull-up resistor on the control pad (50k ohms typical).
  29. Top of Page

  30. Can I obtain a non-tri-state series oscillator?
These product series do not offer a 'No Connect' option for pin 1, only the tri-state/output enable (TS) option is available. However, the customer can use these oscillator series as a non-tri-state oscillator by simply setting the voltage on pad 1 to either no connect or logic high. The oscillator has an internal pull up resistor on pad 1 (50k ohms typical).

  32. How do I layout my printed circuit board for these product series?
The customer should layout their PCB to include proper connections for the tri-state input function. See the applicable series recommended solder pad dimensions (EB13D7, EB15D7) for details.
  33. Top of Page

  34. What are the construction characteristics for these series?
These products consist of a single ASIC and a fundamental mode BAW quartz crystal packaged inside a hermetically sealed ceramic leadless SMD package. The leadless SMD package has four gold plated contact I/O pads. The package has a seam sealed metal cover that is case grounded for improved EMI performance. The package is RoHS compliant and is Pb-free.
